Daij’s Fourth Birthday Party

Early in the party some of the older kids try out the new swing in the big cottonwood out in the field.

Everyone gathers around the piniata as the kids all take their turn trying to break into the treasure chest.

Once the treasure chest is cracked things slowed down for a few minutes as everyone enjoyed their plunder.

The party gathers again to sing happy birthday and share a pirate ship ice cream cake.

McKenzie helps blow out the candles.

After cake Daij opened his presents. Their were enough for all the kids to try out a new toy.

Camping at Mcdonald Lake

The Umphreys went camping at McDonald Lake. August 13-14 2004. All who attended were, Eldon, Christina, Daij, Jenna, Deva, Gage, Michael, Ahni, and the oh so excitable Israel.

Keilana Meet Ahni

The Alberton (Fish Creek) Fire

The crew got the call the night of the fourth and slept in the garrage on cots at fire control just so they could be ready to leave early the next morning. The bus the Crew got on the morning of August 5th 2004, started leaking transmission fluid and delayed them at Joes Smoke Ring outside of Evaro for aboout two hours while they waited for the replacement bus. So haveing a good excuse the crew arrived at the fire a few a hours late.

Daij Umphrey came with his mom and sister to say goodbye to his dad, and to bring him some super tasty egg rolls.

Fire Near Superior

The Mission Valley crew Arrived at the Superiour fire at about 10am on the 3rd of August.

After clearing a space of all the logging slash and debris, The first task was to set up these portable water tanks, otherwise known as pumpkins.

Wildland Firfighter Nathan Umphrey takes a moment for some lunch.

Will Fleming and Adam Peirce have a break on the steep slopes while waiting for water.

Here Brian, and Dave acess the burn.

The crew works its way up the hill.

After a hot meal and shower the firefighters return the next morning to "mop up". (Nathan Umphrey and Adam Piece)

Fire in the Swan Valley

These photographs are of a fire in the north Swan Valley on the night of August 1st and morning of the 2nd 2004

The Mission Valley crew arrived at the fire at about 10pm.

The near full moon was almost enough light to work by.

Firefighters check their gear.

After digging line to the top of the hill, the Mission Valley crew enjoys the show, as Swan Valley Firefighters back burn feuls at the head of the fire.

After an all night shift the crew heads down to the bus, with sleep on the mind.

August begins at Mission Dam

The sun was hot and the water was cool. Some melon and a few lawn chairs are all we need. Mackenzie swam to the rock and practiced diving. Keilana tried her first Montana swim--she didn’t seem to like it. Those Hawaiian girls get used to really warm water.

While we were there, Todd got a fire call. This led to a rapid evacuation, since Eldon and Michael K have been waiting weeks for their first fire call. Summer begins for real.

Becky's white baby got first priority to sit under Valerie's umbrella. The Dam was busy, and all the shade was taken.

Deva and Michael came a little later, but Ahni got her turn under the pink umbrella.

Maysa sleeps through it. Sunday sleeping in the sun is something of a family tradition.

"The Rock"--Mackenzie and Gage join Michael in an old Mission tradition: swimming to and diving from "the Rock."

Keilana's first Montana swim. Sort of. The water seemed cold after California swimming pools.
