We started our trip by renting a car and heading down into the Yucatan. This was a bit of an adventure since everything around the airport is still a bit under construction--not sure if this is connected to hurricane repairs or the usual way of things in Mexico, probably a bit of both. Also, my Spanish is not so stelluar and not only is that the language everyone in Mexico speaks (imagine that) it is also the language of all the road signs. Eventually though, we did make to our destination and even mananged to rent a hotel room and find some pretty delicious food from some of the vendors around the city square in Valladolid that evening.

The cathedral in in the main plaza in Valladolid.

Dev walking through the lobby of our hotel, El Meson del Marques.

El Castillo de Kukulcan at Chichen Itza.

Swimming in the Dzitnup Cenote just outside of Valladolid. This looks kind of creepy in this photo. I guess it is an underground cave, but once you actually get inside (the walk down in quite dark and spooky if they don’t have the lights in the tunnel on) the water in the pool inside is actually really clear and seems to be glowing tuquoise-blue from the bottom. You can also see fish swimming around. Its pretty cool. There is just one opening at the top of the cave. There is a whole underground river system through this part of the country, but I guess they discovered this particular underground cenote when some farmer’s pig seemed to just disappear.

A street in Valladolid.
