Pre-Seminar: Forming discussion questions
Socratic DialogueBefore the Socratic Seminar, please read the assigned text and write at least one question in each of the following categories:
1. Close-ended question:
Write a question about the text that will help everyone come to an agreement about events or characters in the text. The question usually has a “correct” answer.
2. Connection-to-today question:
Write a question connecting the text to the real world of today.
3. Open-ended question:
Write an opinion question about the text that will require evidence and group discussion and to form an interpretation that is reasonable and supported by the text.
4. Universal theme/essential question:
Write a question dealing with a theme (or themes) of the text that will encourage group discussion about the universality of the text.
5. Literary Analysis Question: Write a question dealing with how an author chose to compose a literary piece. How did the author manipulate point of view, characterization, or archetypal hero patterns, for example?
